Resurrection Mary: The Ghost of Archer Avenue
Chicagoland's most famous ghost story: a young woman in a white dress, a ride from a dance hall on Archer Avenue, and a cemetery gate in Justice. Where the legend came from and why it won't die.
Every October somebody in Chicagoland tells the story again. A young woman in a white dress, a dance at a ballroom on Archer Avenue, a ride home, and a stop at the cemetery gates where she simply isn't in the car anymore.
She's Resurrection Mary, and she may be the most famous "vanishing hitchhiker" ghost in the country.
The story
The legend goes like this: drivers on Archer Avenue on the Southwest Side and into the suburbs pick up a quiet young woman, often described as blonde and dressed for a dance, sometimes cold to the touch. She asks to be taken up Archer. As the car passes Resurrection Cemetery in Justice, she vanishes.
In the most-told versions, she'd been dancing at the old Willowbrook Ballroom (once called the Oh Henry Ballroom) down the road in Willow Springs.
Where it started
Reports go back to the 1930s. One of the best-known early accounts comes from a man named Jerry Palus, who said in 1939 that he danced with a girl at the ballroom, drove her home up Archer, and watched her disappear at the cemetery.
Who was she? Nobody knows. Some writers point to Mary Bregovy, a young woman killed in a car crash in 1934, though records show she was buried at a different cemetery. Others think the legend grew out of several local tragedies blended together, the way ghost stories do.
Why it lasted
- A real road. Archer Avenue is an old diagonal road lined with cemeteries, woods and forest preserves. At night it feels like a ghost story.
- A real ballroom and a real cemetery. You can drive the route.
- Retelling. Newspaper columns, radio shows, songs and ghost tours kept it alive for decades.
The Willowbrook Ballroom itself burned in 2016, but Mary's story outlived it.
If you go
Resurrection Cemetery is an active Catholic cemetery. Be respectful: visit during open hours, don't trespass after dark, and remember these are real families' graves.
Archer Avenue is a real road with real traffic. Don't stop on it to look for ghosts.
Got a Resurrection Mary story from your family? Plenty of Chicagoland families have one.
