Nightmare on Chicago Street Is Saturday, October 17, and Friday Is a Separate Ticket
October 17 in downtown Elgin, eight blocks become a horror event with zones, performers and Svengoolie. Friday October 16 is a separate concert.
You know the weekend. Someone in the group chat says "Nightmare's coming up," and then everyone asks which night. This year there's a real answer. Saturday, October 17, 2026, is Nightmare on Chicago Street: eight blocks of downtown Elgin, with general admission from 6 to 11 p.m. Friday, October 16, is a different event, a concert night called The Arrival. Each night needs its own ticket, so check which one you're buying.
Saturday is the full downtown night
The City of Elgin produces the event and calls it the Midwest's largest immersive horror event. The city newsletter lists Saturday, October 17, as 6 to 11 p.m. in downtown Elgin, and the ticket listing shows the same hours. Saturday is the one that fills the whole downtown footprint people know from past years. Tourism listings say this year's event is presented by the Zombie Defense Initiative, or ZDI. That's the name you'll see on the top ticket tier.
General admission gets in at 6 p.m. ZDI All Access ticket holders get in an hour earlier, at 5. Some listings print "5 to 11" for both nights, but that 5 p.m. Saturday start is for All Access. Everyone else gets in at 6.
Friday, October 16, is Nightmare on Chicago Street: The Arrival. It runs 5 to 11 p.m. and stays on Chicago Street only. It's built around a concert stage, so it's a smaller night. The city and the event FAQ both say a Friday ticket doesn't include Saturday, and there are no combination packages.
What the eight blocks hold
On Saturday, downtown becomes a post-apocalyptic setting split into themed zones. The city's May 29 release says these zones are back:
- The Safe Zone, the zombie-survivor hub on Chicago Street, where alcohol is allowed
- Plaza Mictlán, which last year had mariachi and Aztec dancers
- Cirq D' Freak, a circus zone with sinister clowns, sideshow performers and carnival chaos
- Kingdom of Plantae, described last year as a post-apocalyptic jungle
- The Blood Lands
- Svengoolie's B-Movie Boulevard
- Nightmare Alley, the haunted house
The city's September 28 notice says Saturday has hundreds of performers. General admission also covers three stages with live music and DJs, celebrity appearances, photo ops, retail and food vendors, themed drinks and a costume contest. The 2026 Saturday band lineup hadn't been posted as of early October, so watch the event's site and social accounts.
Chicago's horror host will be there. MeTV's appearances page lists Svengoolie at Nightmare on Chicago Street on Saturday, October 17, for a one-hour autograph signing and the finals of the costume contest. If you've got a costume ready two weeks before Halloween, Saturday is the night to wear it.

What a ticket costs
The city says there are four admission choices, and both the city and the event homepage send buyers to the same 2026 listing on Universe. Prices as of October 7, 2026:
- Saturday general admission: $35 face, $40.86 at checkout. On sale through 11:59 p.m. Friday, October 16.
- Saturday ZDI All Access: $89 face, $96.48 at checkout, on the same sale window. You get 5 p.m. entry through a private entrance, priority for the haunted attraction and photo ops, unlimited re-entry, a lanyard, separate food and restrooms, and a lounge that streams the main stage. It also includes an all-ages off-site zombie-wedding lounge with one complimentary drink.
- Friday general admission (The Arrival): $49 face, $55.28 at checkout. On sale through 11:59 p.m. Thursday, October 15.
- Friday The Arrival All Access: $79 face, $86.18 at checkout, on the same sale window.
VIP parking is a separate add-on. It's not included in any admission tier, not even All Access, and costs $50 face ($56.31 at checkout) for each night. It's sold through the evening before that night.
Waiting costs a bit more. Day-of general admission on the listing is $40 face ($46.01 at checkout) for Saturday and $54 face ($60.43) for Friday. The listing shows a $2 processing fee, but the checkout totals come to more than the face price plus $2, so plan on the higher number. The event can sell out. If it hasn't, day-of tickets are sold at a separate box office, not at the entrance gates, and only ticket holders get into the event zone.
Friday's lineup, if you want it: gates at 5 p.m., The Ataris at 6, Plain White T's at 7:30 and Gym Class Heroes at 9. Friday also has a haunted attraction, food and drink vendors, roaming performers and access to the circus zone.
Before you click buy, know that the city says all sales are final: no refunds and no transfers. That includes weather, delays, shortened sets, schedule changes and cancellation.
Kids, bags, props, and rain
Anyone can come, but the night is aimed at adults. The FAQ says some performances may not suit children, the area is dim, and alcohol is served in the Safe Zone. Anyone under 17 has to stay with a paid adult the whole time.
At the gate, the FAQ turns away:
- Weapons and prop weapons. You'll be sent back. A prop found inside can be taken, and there's no promise you'll get it back. Leave the foam machete at home.
- Strollers and wagons.
- Outside food and drinks, including empty tumblers, cups, mugs, coolers, glassware and other containers.
- Animals other than service animals. The FAQ warns that the night is loud and crowded.
- Bags larger than 10 by 6 by 2 inches. Those go back to the car. Older pages say no bags at all, but the current FAQ allows a small one.
Costumes are encouraged. The FAQ also says to bring both cash and a card, because vendors take different payments and spotty Wi-Fi can slow card payments.
On weather, the FAQ says a little rain won't stop the event. In extreme weather the Safe Zone can close, and updates go out on the event's website, Facebook, Instagram and X. Since the city won't refund for weather, check the forecast before you buy, not after.
Where to go, and where not to park yet
The event runs on Chicago Street from Douglas to Villa in downtown Elgin. The Universe ticket listing gives the venue as "150 Dexter Ave," which is close to City Hall's address, 150 Dexter Court. That's not where the gates are. Head for Chicago Street.
Friday's concert stage is on East Chicago Street near Riverside Drive.
Parking for 2026 isn't settled yet. The FAQ promises designated parking, shuttles, VIP parking sold with tickets and a handicapped lot, but says the details "will be announced at a later date." Until that map is posted, don't count on any particular lot.
For an idea of how it usually works: in 2025, the city ran free shuttles between the event and Elgin High School and Larkin High School from 4:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m., according to the Courier-News. That was last year's setup, not a promise for this year. Expect something similar, but check the event site the week of.

Why Saturday is the night people mean
For years, Nightmare on Chicago Street has been Elgin's big Halloween street festival. It's a single Saturday night when downtown fills with zombies, haunts and costumed crowds. The Courier-News reports it was canceled in 2020 and 2021 because of COVID, which is why the 2025 edition counted as the 13th.
In 2024 and 2025, Friday was a smaller warm-up. The city and downtown merchants put music and performance art inside businesses and on the street. In 2025 that ran from as early as 5 p.m. until 10, while crews were still building the big Saturday setup and street food and drinks weren't out yet.
The change came at the city's November 12, 2025, budget meeting. Amanda Harris, Elgin's director of cultural arts and special events, said the Saturday footprint couldn't get any bigger, so the city would add a Friday concert on one stage on East Chicago Street near Riverside Drive and put that money into the music. The city's May 29, 2026, release confirmed it: this is the first year the event runs two nights.
So Friday is now a real ticketed concert, and the price has gone up a little: last year's all-access pass was $80, and Saturday's is $89 this year. Saturday still has the full eight blocks, the zones, Nightmare Alley and Svengoolie. When people around Elgin say "Nightmare," that's still the night they mean.
